Establishing Valuable Relationships With Colleagues For A Harmonious Workplace
03 October 2016 by Emma
To most of you, working in a company where you are drawing a good salary and receiving excellent employees' benefits is an ideal workplace environment you can be which is indeed true! However, there is another simple factor that will change your perspective in judging whether this company is indeed a great environment. Yes, the people!
Camaraderie and having a harmonious relationship with colleagues will shape a happy and comfortable work environment where colleagues are helpful, motivating and supportive to each other. In such an environment, it is possible for the employees to perform better at their jobs and lesser issues during team work. When you experience such harmony, the chances are that you will have a greater sense of belonging to the company.
But, what happens if you have everything you could want in a company yet constantly in conflicts with your colleagues? Not only will it affect your performance at work and decrease your productivity and team efforts, but it could also threaten your opportunities for career advancements.
As everyone is pressured to fulfil their roles and personal achievements, it may lead to them lacking in efforts to upkeep the relationship with colleagues. It is therefore, important to keep the following tips in mind!
Respect
It is vital that we remember that we each have our parts to play to achieve success and growth. Thus, we need to learn to respect each other's space and time by knowing when is the right time to chit chat with our colleagues, especially for trivial issues like the recent trends or gossips. Never barge into their cubicles unless they show consent, thereby letting you know they are available at that moment. Keep in mind that, we should treat others how we would like to be treated. You don't want people barging into your cubicle just to make small talks with you while you are trying your best to rush for a deadline, would you?
Approachable
At times, team efforts are necessary to achieve success for projects and campaigns. Although each has their part to play to make it work, it would be disastrous still if you are only to focus on your part and being selfish when help is needed from your teammates. Or times when your peers need your advice on certain subjects as you possess the specific skills they need. You may be busy with your own tasks, but at such times of need, it is then necessary to spare a few moments to listen to your colleague and help them where necessary. Put yourself in their shoes, when you need help and go to them yet get rejected, how will you feel?
Apologise
Learning to apologise when it is your mistake that causes errors or failures initiate an environment where everyone acts justly and kind on each other. Leading by example also encourages others to be accountable for their mistakes. Such actions decrease the conflicts that could arise and promote workplace harmony.
Equality
As colleagues to one another, it is a good attribute to be able to treat each other with dignity and respect while having everyone in the company to promote equality treatment amongst all, so that each individual are treated fairly and justly, without judgements. The people in the company learn to understand, appreciate and value each other for their unique capabilities and try to maximise it for the best of each and overall performance.
As an employer or superior, holding the higher authority, the more this group of people should practice fairness to each employee where equal opportunities are presented to them to allow them to push themselves for further progression in their careers.
In conclusion
Establishing excellent relationships with colleagues will turn your ordinary workplace into a harmonious and outstanding one. Realise the effects it will chalk up in the long run. It could be the people that affect your overall ability to perform and excel, not the good benefits or salary package you have.
